One afternoon, decades ago, as I was exiting a college class, an idea came to me: “How do we believe there is a supernatural if we do not know the limits of what is natural?” What is it specifically that nature can’t do? Maybe we are too quick to accept a supernatural realm. Could it be that all phenomena are of the natural world? We just don’t understand it all well enough yet. Wow, this made my entire world, everything I had been taught, feel shaky. This idea set me on my journey of thinking for myself about these big ideas.

This journey toward a more satisfying and solid outlook is personal, but doable and essential. The journey is calling to us all; it is our right and I think, our obligation. No one can do it for us. No (supposed) expert can show us the way. Step by step we can make progress with these big questions while holding on to reverence and wonder about the magnificence all around us.
